Total Terminal Tractor Teardown!

Well, TODAY I engaged in a little something I like to call….

Total Terminal Tractor TEARDOWN!!!

So, as some of you may know, a couple weeks back I picked up a JD 160 for parts… Specifically the transaxle… So today was the DAY! Gutsy goes under the knife!

First the seat…

Then those pesky hidden deck bolts

The naked tractor! Next, the gas tank

There’s the drive belt, and the shifter linkage exposed

Interesting, no c-clip on this rim! Sure hope it comes off nice!

Yup, the left one just slid right off, the right one took some gentle tapping to get it down the shaft

Its FREE!!! Hope it works! Stay tuned for a look inside one of these puppies!

(Whole lot more time later, because I got carried away and forgot to take more pictures…)

So, THIS is what happens when you leave a tractor out in a BAAAD neighborhood!

Oh, the carnage!

Getting Closer Every Day

Sooo… I came up with a bit of a new plan. MrBeef from MTF was kind enough to ship me up his crankshaft and .010 over piston/rod, and so I took Cranky’s block in to a local shop and got it bored out .010 over… AND the valve seats done… AND it got degreased! So, the full spa treatment! I was SUPPOSED to go pick it up today, so I drove down there and had a yak with them… Turns out, I shoulda pulled EVERYTHING off the block… I didn’t, because one of the things I wanted them to do was my valve clearances. I knew enough to know that if they were going to grind the valve seats, the clearances would have to be checked and redone… So when I walked in, all the small bits (cam, springs, valves, governor, tappets) were in a box… So, I said “Oh, okay, well… Which tappet is intake and which is exhaust?”

“Doesn’t matter, they’re identical.”

“Hmmmm… Well… The tech manual for this engine says to mark them when you take them out…”

“Well, they should be identical so lets take a look – Oh…”

Nope, they’re not. One’s about an eighth of an inch longer than the other…

“Well, when you put it back together you should be able to tell, when you go to check your valve clearances. You know you’ll have to grind them, right?”

“Um, yeah, I guess that means you guys didn’t check the valve clearances, then? All I’ve got is a bench grinder…”

“Oh. Nope, you gotta put them in a machine…”

So, Cranky’s K gets to spend another day or two in the spa, getting its valves ground, but hopefully when they put it all back together to check the clearances, it’ll be as close to perfect and ready to go as possible! Next step – rings/gaskets/seals and strapping things back together. Oh, and its BEAUTIFUL after the cleaning they did! I’ll take some pics once its back, to show off how gorgeous it is! Perfectly machined valve seats, a crosshatching to DIE for in the cylinder, and everything so spotless even LTGal would touch it!

Only another 4-5 inches of snow to melt before I can get the tarp off Wally and start reassembly!

Getting closer every day!

(I really hope that, when I finally pull that tarp off, those are actually still TRACTORS under there…. Not that some varmint has come, stolen away my tractors and replaced them with a big pile of, oh I dunno, acorns or something!).

Well, SOME door progress

This morning I took the time to get down to brass tacks on creating the door hardware.

Here’s the first hole I cut in the 1/8″ x 1.5″ steel that’s going to form the hangarsdoor2

Mounted the sheave, just to see how it would fit

door01

Then tried to figure out how to do the bending.   Tried putting it into my vice and bending the 4′ piece of steel around, that didn’t work because a) I don’t have enough clearance in my workroom to bend around like that and b) I don’t have my vice permanently mounted.    A flash of inspiration led to THIS:

door3

I ran a 2.5″ x 3/8″ bolt through the side of my workbench, threw the steel stock onto it, the sheave onto it, and secured it all with a nylock nut.  Securing it that way enabled me to do THIS:

door4

Not totally perfect, but I’m getting the hang of it.  The plan is, I need to bend BOTH ends of the 4′ bar, THEN cut it in half, then bend the OTHER end of each half and drill the holes, THEN cut each of THOSE guys in half so I wind up with 4 hangars shaped like this one…  Then I drill 2 holes in the other end of each hangar for mounting them on the doors…

The BIG problem is drilling the holes.  I quickly found that the drill would drift a LOT, so my first one the holes don’t quite line up.  What to do, what to do?  I know!  Go shopping!

drillpress

Ta-DA!  THIS is going to make all the rest of the holes a breeze, I hope!  Now I just need to figure out what speed to set it to for drilling mild steel… Didn’t have a chance to try it out today as I had a few other commitments, so stay tuned!

(PS, LTGal’s okay with this purchase, as it can be used/useful for HER projects too!)

Another reno in the wall!

the_target

Well, actually, its another reno, AND its a wall!  and hopefully it will soon be a pair of barn-style sliding doors, based on this online tutorial.

Starting to get ramped up for summer…

IF it ever comes….

Well, wasn’t really doing things ON my John Deere today, but I had the good fortune to get permission to bring the grubby old engine block from Cranky into my basement workroom. I spent the evening scraping old gasket off, cleaning off the bits of dead head gasket, cleaning up the carbon off the valve stems and just generally trying to tidy it up… Next steps, lap the valves, then take the .010 over piston I just got from MrBeef on MTF (Thanks man, it looks darn nice!) and the block into a local engine shop to get them to bore the block out to match the piston… Get them to check the valve clearance, hopefully by then my engine refresh kit will be in and I can start strapping together another engine… Crank and rod and piston from MrBeef’s donor machine, block from Cranky, carb from Wally… I’m hoping to get some nice weather SOON so that I can get another crack at getting Wally all engine-ed up and running!

Cabin Fever Setting In!

How can we tell that both LTGal and I are suffering from cabin fever?  I asked if I could bring in Cranky’s greasy, grubby old engine block so I could practice measuring it up with my micrometer set I got for Christmas… and she LET me!

So, while cleaning up in my workroom to make room for the engine block on my work bench, I found some old slides of mine from forever ago.  The first slide I pulled out was THIS!

jeep

My FIRST truck from the late ’80s!   A 1974 Jeep J-10…  4×4, PS, PB, A/C, the whole nine yards!  And it also got about 6 miles to the gallon, IIRC.

I’m fine, its the tractor that needs help!

Haven’t posted in a long time, as this has NOT been a good winter for working on tractors.  Too cold and too much snow.  I HAVE been using LittleTractor for snow removal, but that’s only interesting for the first couple of times… After the 12th time, it gets a bit wearing.  Yesterday, however, I ran into a hazard of urban tractoring that I hadn’t really considered, and I thought I should post a cautionary tale…

We had about 4-6 inches of the white dirt fall over the past couple days, so yesterday afternoon I went to take Little out to go snowblow it…  Things didn’t start well, we slid into a soft patch with ice under it backing out of the garage, and I wound up finally having to clean the car off and use it to pull Little out.  That put me a bit behind, and I wound up snow blowing the sidewalk in front of my place during rush-hour traffic… NOT something I like doing.

I was JUST about done when the snow blower belt popped off.  CRUD!  This has started happening for Little fairly frequently, so I’ve started packing along my 1/2″ ratcheting box-end for undoing things, rehooking the belt and doing them back up… But it can take some time, and its very frustrating (a new belt for the blower might be on my shopping list this spring).   So I shut things down, got down on the ground and got working on it… About 5-8 minutes into the process, I got up from underneath because I wanted to move the tractor another foot or so from the edge of the sidewalk (it was a bit too close to the street for my comfort).   About that time, I heard a fire engine leave the fire station a block from my place, so I stopped everything and stood watching (always good to make sure you’re alert when emergency vehicles are deployed, right?).  The driver made eye contact with me and waved…  Which I thought was a bit odd…  But they went past, and I got back down and underneath the tractor to try to get the silly belt tensioner spring reconnected, which is always a PITA, especially when its cold outside.

Well, 5 minutes of grunting and cursing later, I heard footsteps and someone say “Afternoon, sir!”.  I look out from underneath the tractor, and there’s a pair of emergency-orange emergency-service boots standing behind my tractor.  Rolling out from under the tractor, I see the driver from the fire truck standing there…  And down at the intersection in front of my house, I see the truck..

“We had a call from a concerned citizen about someone in distress lying on the ground by their tractor.  Is everything alright, sir?”

“Yes, I’m fine, its the tractor that’s broken…”

“I kinda figured that when we drove by and I saw you on it, but we’ve got to check these things out, just in case!  Have a nice day!”

Thoroughly embarrassed, I got back to work on trying to rehook that spring.  I’d JUST gotten it re-hooked, when I heard a second voice,

“Is everything alright, sir?  We’ve had a report of a person in distress!”

Looking out from under the tractor again, I could see a pair of black leather service boots and a pair of black trousers, and the front end of a police cruiser, stopped on the street just upstream from me,

“Yes I’m fine, its my tractor that’s broken!”

“I thought that might be the problems when I saw you moving around underneath it.  I’ll contact our COM people so they know not to send anyone else out.”

“I appreciate your concern, I guess I need a bigger sign that says my tractor’s broken.”

“that might be a good thing, sir.  Have a nice day!”

LTGal said its a REALLY good thing that an ambulance wasn’t dispatched, because THEY charge $250 for any false calls like that…

Neutral Start Switch for Ernie

Well, Ernie looks like he’s the front-runner for snow pushing this winter… I got the fuel leak issues resolved by putting a newer style shutoff valve on him, I put a set of lights, wheel weights and chains on him, and ran him around a bit last weekend to get the feel of him… The only big problem is the lack of neutral start switch… REALLY scary when you forget… Particularly since my boot heels hook the shifter when I get on or off him… So, thanks to some advice from GeorgiaDeere, I learned that you could sub in a fairly common, $8.00 NAPA switch (SW179) for the $89 original neutral start switch from Deere… Plus, I got a spare bracket off of Cranky (saving myself $60 on the bracket) AND the wiring harness off Cranky (saving another $18)… So here it is, the neutral start switch for Ernie…

Here’s the SW179, a bit bigger than the stock one

So I needed to enlarge the mount hole a bit in the bracket

Then I figured out where the switch went from open to closed using my meter…

Marked it with a little dot of ink for when I mounted the switch…

Made some pigtails with crimp-on spade connectors for hooking into the wiring harness, because there’s not enough room to fit the connectors on the switch when its mounted,

Soldered the other ends into rings so they wouldn’t come out of the screw connectors easily,

Hooked them up,

Mounted the switch

Adjusted the mount so the switch closes when the detent hits it in the neutral spot…

Next step, finding some time to pull the wheel weights off Ernie, drop the transaxle, and mount this bad boy…

Post-Mortem on Wally

Okay, I admit it…. DieselDave, you were right….

That knocketa-knocketa-knocketa sound…. The quietness of Wally’s engine, the apparent lack of power…. Had a minute tonight so I thought I’d just go pull the head off Wally as a start to the teardown… Took out the third head bolt, oil came out with it….

Uh oh….

Oil all over the combustion chamber, burnt onto the valves, head gasket came off in two pieces and was all sticky with oil…

Ring gap fairly far out of spec… BIG clue! Not sure why I couldn’t see this when I dropped the piston in, and I don’t think this is something that happened SINCE I started working on the engine… Could THAT MUCH out of round happen in, maybe 15 minutes of run time, even with the possibility of honing grit in the cylinder? I’m not too impressed with the engine rebuilders that I took the block to… The ones who said it was in spec… Then again, you get what you pay for… And I guess a 5 minute look by them for free was worth every penny….

Lots of alternative plans bubbling through my head, but very few do not involve either mucho $$$$ or lotsa time…. And to top it all off… Ernie smokes so much I don’t think I can drive him…

Suggestions and condolences are welcome… I’m going to bed now….
